California vehicle registration FAQ

Common questions about registering and renewing a car in California, answered by Highland Auto Registration.

How do I register a car in California?

You submit an application with proof of ownership (usually the title), pay DMV fees, and meet any smog or VIN verification requirements. We prepare and file the paperwork for you. See required documents.

I just moved to California. How soon must I register?

California generally expects new residents to register their vehicle within 20 days of becoming a resident. Out-of-state vehicles usually need a VIN verification and, for most gasoline vehicles, a smog check. See out-of-state title transfer.

I bought a used car. How long do I have to transfer it?

The buyer generally has 10 days to report the transfer to the DMV, and the seller should file a release of liability within 5 days. Late transfers can add penalties.

How long does registration take?

Many transactions are submitted the same visit. Your new registration card and stickers, or a new title, are mailed by the DMV afterward, and mailing times vary.

What does registration cost?

Our flat service fee starts at $40 (title transfers $60). DMV fees are extra and depend on your vehicle’s value, type, county and any late penalties. See pricing or get an instant quote.

How does renewal work?

The DMV usually mails a renewal notice about 60 days before your registration expires. It tells you if a smog check is required. Bring the notice (or your plate number), proof of insurance and the smog certificate if needed, and we’ll renew it. See registration renewal.

Does my car need a smog check?

Most gasoline vehicles more than 8 model years old need a smog check every two years at renewal, and usually when ownership changes. Some vehicles, such as electric cars, are exempt. Your renewal notice will say if one is required.

My registration expired. What now?

You can still renew. Late fees apply and grow over time, so it’s best to act quickly. See expired registration renewal.

Can I do it without coming in?

Yes. We can handle your registration online and mail your documents, stickers and plates to you.

General information only. DMV rules and deadlines can change, so we confirm what applies to your vehicle before we file.
