Registration renewal
Renew your California vehicle registration without the DMV line. We check what’s needed, handle the filing, and get your sticker and card moving.
Highland Auto Registration is a private business, not the California DMV. These services are also available directly at dmv.ca.gov.
Current / due soon
Your registration is still valid or about to expire. We confirm exactly what DMV needs for your vehicle, collect the fees, and submit the renewal so you can get back on the road.
What to bring
Tick items off as you gather them. Exact requirements depend on your vehicle and situation — we confirm everything when you book.
What can delay it
- Smog certification not completed when your notice requires one.
- Insurance not on file or a lapse in coverage.
- Registration holds — for example unpaid citations or court holds.
- Address mismatch or a returned notice so DMV has an old address.
- Vehicle in non-operation (PNO) status that must be updated first.
Expired / past due
Registration expired? It’s common — and fixable. Late fees and penalties apply, and we’ll walk through exactly what you owe before we file anything.

Tick items off as you gather them. Exact requirements depend on your vehicle and situation — we confirm everything when you book.
What can delay it
- Late penalties that increase over time — the sooner the better.
- Smog check that was skipped on an earlier cycle.
- Insurance gaps or no insurance on file.
- Vehicle was in non-operation (PNO) status or the record needs correcting.
- Registration holds from citations or other agencies.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew?
California typically lets you renew before your expiration date once you receive your renewal notice. Bring or send us your notice and we’ll confirm timing for your vehicle.
Do I always need a smog check to renew?
Not always. Your renewal notice states whether a smog certification is required. Some newer and some older vehicles are exempt from the regular check. We’ll confirm for your plate.
What if my registration has been expired a long time?
You can usually still renew, but late penalties apply and additional requirements may come up. Book a visit and we’ll review your record first.
Can you renew it if I lost my notice?
Usually yes — your plate number and VIN are often enough to identify the vehicle. Bring ID and proof of insurance.
Is this the same as going to the DMV?
We are a private registration service, not the DMV. The filing is the same kind of DMV transaction, and you can also do many renewals directly at dmv.ca.gov. Our service fee is for convenience and hands-on help.
